This and That

The Frenchman, aka Cupid, spoiled me on Valentine's Day.  In spite of the accurate, yet insensitive remark made to him earlier that morning, he made my favourite dinner and (mostly) cleaned up, too.  If that wasn't enough, he also presented me with two very practical gifts - an automatic feeder and automatic water dispenser for our future flock of chickens.  What a guy!

I sorted through my clothes again this weekend and finally parted with several items of clothing that I've been stubbornly hanging onto for too long.  Two items that were originally relegated to the donation pile got pulled out and re-purposed.  I have never worn either one of them, not even once.  A frumpy t.shirt dress got chopped off and came back to life as a simple, yet feminine t.shirt and a pretty floral print cotton shirt got its hideous puffy sleeves lopped off and is now a chic sleeveless number that I can't wait to wear when the weather warms up.  I freed up some space and got two brand new items of clothing, in the bargain.  Can't beat that.

My studio project is proceeding a little more slowly than I'd like.  I'd intended to make a trip to town yesterday to pick up another can of paint, but aborted my mission half way there due to weather.  Losing a day's progress didn't seem very important when compared to getting into trouble on the road.  So, I turned my car around and made cookies at home instead.  Not a bad trade-off, really.

We watched two very good movies this weekend.  The Sessions, based on a true story with Helen Hunt and Flight, with Denzel Washington.  Both very well done, thought provoking movies that aren't at all stereotypical.

I'm currently reading The Book Thief by Markus Zusak and enjoying it very much.  I only just found out that it's also a movie.  I just finished reading the biography, The Man Who Lives with Wolves by Shaun Ellis and it's quite fascinating.  His information about wolves and, by association, dogs, is especially interesting to me as a dog owner.

Any books or movie titles you've enjoyed recently that you'd like to share?

It seems to be that February is as harsh as January for winter.

Soon, I am sure spring will come.

It's not worth going out in a bad snowstorm to get paint...it can wait.

The recent authors have been George Saunders, Martin Amis, Gore Vidal, and Andrew O'Hagan. About to start Jamaica Kindcaid's latest, which has received such love/hate reviews, it's bound to be interesting at any rate.

I liked "Flight" and have "The Sessions" in my Netflix queue. Have you seen "Hope Springs" and "The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel" - both good movies about how adult relationships change. If you're interested in US history, "Argo" and "Lincoln" are very good.

I've had an interesting spell of book reading but I wouldn't recommend all of my choices. I can recommend "What Alice Forgot" by Liane Moriarty because I will enjoy reading it again, which I think is one of the best things you can say about a book. I finally read Joan Didion's "The Year of Magical Thinking" which is a book about surviving the loss of a spouse ~ interesting use of dates, times, and memories which I think happens when we think back through grief.

I was cleaning out closets too! I had to make room to put some clothes away that have become too big and when you have gone down so many sizes, you get a lot of clothes! It's hard to part with them because they are perfectly good clothes. Perhaps I just need bigger closets... ;)

Hope you are keeping safe and warm in this blowing snow and that your sweetie is driving safe!

Jen: Looking at the mountains of snow outside my window, I think we may have a lake out there in the spring!

Karin: I hadn't heard about Jamaica's book - I'll check it out.

Sharon: Hope Springs & The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel are two of my favourite movies. I'll check out the book you suggested. Thanks!

Catherine: I wouldn't feel so bad if the clothes I'm keeping were too big...unfortunately, they're too small, so I remain ever hopeful that I'll be able to fit in them again...*sigh*

Chicken-ware for Valentine's Day... The Frenchman is my kind of guy! And I'd say you definitely made the right choice turning back the car and making a batch of cookies instead of toughing out the weather. I'll bet the house smelled heavenly.

Cindy: The house did smell delicious and the cookies didn't last long...My guy knows what will make MY heart flutter, what can I say? *grin*

I watched The Sessions recently, too, Carolynn. I really hope Helen Hunt gets the Oscar. I am filled with a sense of contentment when I read your posts - you are definitely where you need to be. xoxo
